Michael Mortensen
Professional tennis coach
More than 40 years of experience developing players at every level—from ambitious juniors to Grand Slam champions.
I've been fortunate to spend more than 40 years in professional tennis, first as a player and later as a coach.
During my playing career, I competed on the ATP Tour, won five ATP doubles titles and reached a career-high ranking of World No. 34 in doubles. I also had the privilege of representing Denmark in Davis Cup for more than a decade.
Coaching has given me the opportunity to work with players at every stage of their journey—from young juniors taking their first steps in the game to some of the world's best players. Among them are Li Na, Caroline Wozniacki, Jarkko Nieminen and Frederik Fetterlein. Every player has taught me something, and every partnership has been different.
Over the years I've also had the honour of serving Danish tennis as both Billie Jean King Cup captain and coach, as well as Davis Cup coach.
Today I continue to work as a tennis coach and consultant while sharing my passion for the sport as a commentator for HBO Max, Eurosport and Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR).

Co-author of the memoir Grus (Danish for Clay). Written by Peter Pilegaard.
The book is a personal reflection on life, tennis and the experiences that have shaped my journey, both on and off the court.
I've always believed that coaching is about much more than tennis.
My goal is for every player to leave the court feeling inspired, encouraged and looking forward to the next session. Tennis should be an enjoyable challenge—a journey that helps people grow, not only as players, but as individuals.
Every player is different, with different ambitions, strengths and ways of learning. That's why I don't believe in one coaching model for everyone. My role is to understand each individual and adapt my approach to help them develop in the way that suits them best.
One of the most important things I hope to give my players is the ability to become their own coach.
I've always believed that the best coach a player can have is themselves.
My role is to provide the tools, guidance and experience that help players understand their own game, make better decisions and continue learning long after a training session has ended.
Tennis has taught me that, much like life, there will always be challenges. There are good days and difficult days, and both are valuable. The experiences we gain—on and off the court—help us grow, solve problems and move forward.
For me, coaching isn't simply about improving a tennis player. It's about helping people develop confidence, independence and a lifelong enjoyment of the game.
